Jacky Murtaugh – ‘I’m a painter, that’s me, that’s what I do! I paint out of necessity and there’s not always a narrative or a message to convey but more of a feeling that I want to express.
Inspiration comes mostly from nature but often incorporates the run-of-the-mill aspects of everyday life, highlighting beauty in the mundane’.
Lancashire Lass Jacky Murtaugh is a contemporary artist who originally found success Down Under.
Setting up her art practice in 2009 in Adelaide she has won awards for her landscapes (Heyson Art Prize) and became known in the Cycling Community for her vibrant bike art. After a successful exhibition at Adelaide Airport she was invited by the Tour Down Under to display artwork in The Hilton – Adelaide.
Having travelled extensively she has returned to her home town with a different perspective, seeing familiar places with new eyes. Her recent work focuses on her industrial heritage coming from the Mill Town of Burnley and strong coal mining family connections.
In art school Jacky concentrated on figurative work but made an unconscious departure from this to focus on landscapes and seascapes but a move back to the human form in her bike art has recently resurfaced.
